The past two weeks have been tough for the girls and I. I expected this but it still doesn’t make it any easier. I am not sure how I can explain to the girls why they haven’t seen their dad. How does one go about even attempting to explain something like that to them? They have been through so much already over the past year. I am amazed at their resilience through it all.
I do my best to hide my emotions but I am only human and fail more times than I care to admit. I think one of the best things you can do while going through something like this is to spend quality time together as a family. Turn off the TV. Turn off the video games.
Today, we did just that. I grabbed The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook off our bookshelf and called the girls.
Reluctant at first to be pulled from their video games, that quickly changed to pure joy. I watched as they worked together to create a magical dish of chocolate pudding.
I love seeing them getting along and genuinely enjoying each other’s company. I was there of course to help them if need be but they were totally in charge.
Cooking is such a fun way to teach teamwork, reading, science, and math. They had to read each step, measure out all the ingredients, observe the chemical changes occurring, and not piss each other off during the process. The last step proved to be a tad bit challenging.
In the end, we all were able to sit down at the dinner table together and talk about how we did not kill each other. Even the baby got to enjoy our science experiment.
