Okay All You Airbnb Skeptics, Let’s Talk

If you have been following our journey, you know just how often we use Airbnb. I seriously love Airbnb!

Because of Airbnb, I have been able to stay in a yurt near the beach, a tiny home, an RV, a canvas tent, a cottage, an ocean front condo, and some regular ol’ houses as well. It has saved me a ton of money. Not even Motel 6 can beat the prices I have found.

Without a doubt, Airbnb is the best way to save money while traveling.

Let’s take all that in consideration as I show you some tips on using Airbnb Like A boss.

Don’t Go In So Blindly

The number 1 rule for using Airbnb Like A Boss is to READ the reviews. I learned this lesson the hard way. I made the mistake of booking a house in Puerto Rico that only had one review. It was an amazing review so I figured it would be okay. Boy was I in for a surprise. When we arrived at the house in Puerto Rico, it was dirty, full of mold, and there was a hole in the bathroom ceiling leaking water right next to a light fixture. Basically it was the Airbnb from hell. As soon as I called Airbnb, they resolved the issue, refunded my money, and we were off to a beautiful clean condo I found right on the beach. Nice!

Make Sure There Is A Toilet

Read the listing details completely. If you want an entire house to yourself, make sure you are booking the whole place and not just a room. This one is very important for me. I will only book an entire house. I like my privacy and I want to be able to totally unwind and let the kids run around screaming if they want. If you want air conditioning, make sure it is listed. Yes, there will be places listed without air conditioning. This Texas girl can not live without air conditioning, even in cold climates. I learned this lesson the hard way as well when I booked a place in Puerto Rico without air conditioning. Yikes!

Take Care of Their Shit

Be the guest you would want in your own home. Please be respectful of someone else’s home. Have you heard the old saying “treat others how you would like to be treated?”. A sure way to get a great rating is to leave the home the way you found it. In other words, clean up after yourself. I have great reviews because I take care of each rental as if they are my own.

Save Some Money For Me Please

Even though Airbnb is significantly cheaper than a hotel, it doesn’t hurt to ask for a discount. I still struggle with this one because I have never felt good about asking for discounts. I try to think of it like this. It is better for an owner to get some money than no money, right? If I approach it that way, I feel a whole lot better asking. I usually write them and say that I am super interested in their place but it is over my budget. I then give them my budget and tell them that I totally understand if they can’t help. I have only had one owner not come down in price after asking this way.
