Let’s face it. People can be jerks. Sometimes the people closest to us are the ones that are the most negative. It is time to say “F*ck It” to the naysayers in your life. When I decided to unschool my kids while traveling full-time, I was met with a whole bunch of hostility from family members and some friends.
I was told that my girls would grow up and not even be able to get a job at the Dollar Store.
I was told that my kids needed tests.
I was told that I was a selfish mother.
I actually got into heated arguments with family members. Their judging me pissed me off! Feeling utterly defeated, I turned to one of the Facebook groups I follow that was a huge contributor in my inspiration to travel, and I asked the 25,000 member group if they had ever dealt with this. The support that came through was unbelievable. I was not alone in this. Many of them had experienced these same hostile reactions. Over 200 comments with much needed advice were posted. One off the comments really stood out to me. Someone asked me if the people that were against my lifestyle seemed happy. In addition, that person asked me if I would want my life to look like the peoples’ who were against what I was doing. It didn’t take me long to say, “heck no!”. I don’t want my life to look anything like their life and they sure as hell don’t seem that happy. So why in the world was I letting their opinions affect me so greatly? That is just silly.
I chose this lifestyle because it is what works for my family. I didn’t choose it to impress anyone or please anyone. To this day, I am questioned about my lifestyle by family. Especially when it comes to education.
Are they learning?
Are they studying?
Do they know their math facts?
How do they socialize?
These are just a few of the questions we are asked regularly. If my kids were in a traditional school would someone ask me these same questions all the time? No way! People are not ready for someone to break away from the norm.
Kids should be in school.
Everyone should work a 9 to 5.
People should vacation at a resort maybe once or twice a year.
Everyone should have debt, a mortgage, and stuff.
If you do not fit into this box, you are weird.
I will gladly take that weird title as I wake up each day on my own schedule. No longer being awakened by an alarm unless I need to catch an early flight. We wake when we want. Our mornings are peaceful. We eat breakfast together and talk. We go outside for a morning walk and to play in the yard. Chickens visit us each morning in our current Airbnb rental. I sit on the patio and enjoy a cup of coffee while I read a book and the toddler plays in the rocks. If we do not feel like going anywhere we don’t. If we want to go somewhere we do. It is that simple.
I can’t even begin to explain just how much this new lifestyle has changed all of us. Seeing my kids smile each day instead of stressing over homework or panicking over an upcoming test makes all of this so worth it. Our bond has strengthened tremendously. We genuinely enjoy each other’s company. Although there has been so much loss in our lives, it doesn’t feel like it to us. We feel like we have gained so much.
When someone says something negative to us now, I just smile. Secretly, I might want to punch them in the face but in all honesty I usually feel bad for them. I truly wish everyone could experience what we do. It is simply life changing, and I want to share it with the world.
